Alfredo Pirri was born in 1957, he lives and works in Rome (I).

The artistic practice of Alfredo Pirri (Cosenza, 1957) first came to Italian and international attention in the mid-1980s with a number of exhibitions in which he exhibited his SQUADRE PALSTICHE, works that manifested his poetics and aesthetic vision, declining in subsequent years in a variety of different materials, forms and contexts. The distinctive feature expressed by these works is their rendering indistinguishable the boundary between wall and open space, surface and volume, static and movement through the vibrations of light and the energy of painting.  In the first half of the 1980s, his interests were manifold: from the collective elaboration of the magazine Intervallo, to the visual plastic design for the shows of the Krypton company - Eneide, 1982, Angeli di luce, 1985 to the creation of videos including: Il dialogo delle due rose, 1985, with a text by the writer Edmond Jabes, Gli effeminati intellettuali, 1988, inspired by the text by Mishima Yukio, through which Alfredo Pirri makes explicit the ethical sense that art and being an artist entail, as well as his interest in literature and storytelling. Alfredo Pirri creates physical and thought spaces that offer the possibility of reflecting on painting in a period marked by citazionismo figuration in Italy, expressionism in Europe, graffiti art in the United States and the spread of technology as an autonomous artistic tool and language. Conscious of the impossibility of acting within a generational identity that no longer existed (as it had been for the artists of previous generations) or that was still to be constructed (as it would be for the artists of the 1990s), Alfredo Pirri proposed, against the current of the postmodern lightness of the 1980s, an operativity that committed the spectator to placing himself in the perceptive space of the exhibition in a mobile and sensitive manner that challenged not only his gaze but also his body and its balance. This aspect will remain constant in his work in subsequent years, for example in the installations he has made over the last ten years in the series Passi (Certosa di San Lorenzo, Padula, Salerno, 2003; Ninfeo di Villa Guastavillani, Bologna, 2005; Chiesa del Suffragio, Pesaro, 2006; Caesar's Forum, Rome, 2007) made in places marked by past history, with the use of large surfaces of mirrors placed on the ground that break under the viewer's feet, giving him the sense of belonging to a temporal landscape that is continually modified by his very presence and action.
